IC Information

Name: Barry Allen
Canon: The Flash CW TV series

Preincarnation Information

Appearance: Barry Allen The Flash

History: Over here.

The short version, as a child, Barry Allen witnessed the impossible. When he was eleven years old, he witnessed the appearance of a bizarre lightning storm in his home that circled around his mother. Helpless to step in, Barry could only watch and catch a glimpse of a mysterious red-eyed man in yellow amid the lightning until he suddenly found himself spirited away about twenty blocks in an instant. Running home as fast as his legs could carry him, he found his mother murdered and his father under arrest. With a murder weapon in hand and no other evidence besides the testimony of a small child telling what amounted to a bogeyman story, his father was found guilty of murder and sent to prison. And Barry found himself in the care of Joe West, the same detective who had arrested his dad.

For the rest of his life, Barry was determined to clear his father’s name and correct the injustice that resulted in him going to jail. Which meant first proving the existence of the Man In Yellow. He studied criminology and forensic science and took a job as a CSI with the Central City Police Department, hoping to find and prove more “impossible” cases. Then one fateful night, the impossible suddenly became real when an explosion at nearby STAR Labs triggered a lightning storm that resulted in Barry being struck by a bolt of lightning.

One nine month coma later, Barry awoke to discover he’d been gifted with the ability of superhuman speed. Donning a special suit, Barry worked with STAR Labs CEO Harrison Wells and his team to track down other “metahumans” affected by the blast and protect his city. Now, the impossible was real and he was it and the chase was finally on to track down the Man In Yellow and bring him down once and for all….

Personality:
Barry Allen is a bright and driven young man with a strong sense of right and wrong and desire to help others. He’s stubborn and impulsive and tends to act in the moment rather than think things through.

For the most part, Barry Allen could best be described as genuine. He’s friendly, outgoing, honest, enthusiastic and generally pretty easy to get along with. Even though he does have a tendency to occasionally slip into a bit of awkwardness, his natural charm and good heart tend to bring him out of it before long. He has a strong sense of justice and right and wrong and will always stand up for what’s right, no matter what kind of risk that poses to him.

A nerd through and through, Barry is a major comic book and science geek which, along with the aforementioned sense of justice, is partly what inspired him to take on his career as a forensic scientist. He’s excited by and very interested in learning about new things, even going so far as to admire a pretty teched out murder weapon.

One issue Barry certainly has is his stubbornness. Once he sets his mind to a task or course of action, there’s almost nothing anybody can do to dissuade him from it. Adding to this is his reckless nature. Barry is the type to rush headlong into any situation, often without stopping to consider or take stock of the situation. Basically once an idea gets in his head, it can be astonishingly difficult to hammer it back out and most often involves him experiencing firsthand how disastrous it might be. This isn’t entirely a weakness though. Stubbornness can also be a great source of determination, and it’s definitely true that Barry Allen never walks away or backs down when people are in danger.

Above all else, all other strengths and flaws, Barry is a hero. More than anything, the driving desire and influence in his life is to help people however he can. Whether that’s solving a crime with science, or running up the side of a burning building. No matter the danger, or the hardship, or the scale of the threat one thing is for certain: Barry will always keep on running.

Abilities: All of Barry’s abilities revolve around his core ability of superspeed. As a speedster, Barry is connected to and acts as a conduit for the extradimensional source of power called the Speed Force which manifests in a variety of ways.

Speed
The first and most visible of which is, naturally, running really fast. Even at a “leisurely” pace, Barry tends to travel at somewhere between three to six hundred miles per hour and can break the sound barrier without a whole lot of effort. He can run fast enough to run along vertical surfaces, including straight up a 90 degree wall and even across water.

Of course, running isn’t the only thing that Barry can do really fast. He can even carry out smaller, more detailed tasks in the blink of an eye (sink full of dishes done in 2.3 seconds, baby). This also makes him a formidable fighter, able to throw punches as fast as a speeding car. His brain activity fires up to that rate as well, meaning he’s not just acting at superspeed he’s thinking at it as well.

He can also rotate his arms fast enough to create powerful vortexes of air and gusts of wind powerful enough to blow a person right off their feet, or suck the oxygen out of a raging fire.

Truthfully, Barry’s full potential is limitless. There are no upper limits to his speed, save for what he himself believes is possible.

Reflexes
When using superspeed, Barry’s perception and reflexes alter to match the incredible pace he’s going at. He can dodge obstacles while running faster than sound, dodge or even catch bullets with his bare hands and generally react to stimuli in an instant.

Increased durability,Cellular Regeneration and Metabolism
Likewise, at superspeed Barry’s physiology alters as well to allow him to endure the stresses that such speeds would put on the human body. He can move at superspeed without worrying about, well… being torn apart by friction, being liquified by going from 800 mph to 0 on a dime and without crushing himself to a pulp from an impact, or destroying his arm with a superspeed punch. Presumably, this implies that the faster Barry is going, the more durable he becomes, making him extremely difficult to both hit and harm. This protection also seems to extend to objects that he’s in physical contact with, albeit to a lesser degree. This allows him to carry objects and people along as passengers without the forces involved annihilating them.

In addition, his body’s cells regenerate at phenomenally increased rate. His body will heal from damage much faster than a normal person’s, with cuts and scrapes vanishing within minutes if not seconds and broken bones within a couple of hours. Injuries that should sideline a person for weeks become a mere few hours of inconvenience and he can survive would-be fatal damage by virtue of his cells repairing the worst of it that quickly.

Most of his abilities are fueled by the Speed Force itself but they also come with a greatly increased hyper-metabolism. Barry must consume many, many more calories than an average human adult his age or suffer from dizzy spells or just pass out entirely. He can put away a stack, a literal stack of cheeseburgers in a single sitting.

Of course, this metabolism isn’t entirely negative. By speeding it up, Barry can shrug off the effects of drugs or toxins by simply burning them off over the span of a few seconds. This, combined with his healing ability, makes him nearly impossible to poison or affect with toxins of any sort.

It also means he can’t get drunk. At all. So, y’know, there’s that.

Vibration
Oh, grow up. Another aspect of Barry’s superspeed is the ability to vibrate parts of, of his entire body, at incredibly high speeds. Primarily this can be used to give himself a blurry, indistinct appearance to further obscure his features, but there are other applications as well. By touching a surface and vibrating against it, he can transfer a ton of kinetic energy into it causing it to rupture and shatter or trip mechanical devices like locks and the like at lower frequencies. Most incredibly, by vibrating at the right frequency, Barry can become intangible and pass straight through solid objects as if they were thin air.

Electrical Generation
Because of his powers, Barry’s entire body is suffused with a powerful electric charge which is the source of the yellow lightning he gives off when traveling at high speeds. With some practice, he can actually manipulate this electricity to give off a powerful static charge. By running in rapid circles he can even gather and focus this electrical charge into a powerful attack, hurling it at a target when he comes to a stop.

Time Travel
Now we get to the big stuff. By traveling at or even beyond the speed of light, Barry can actually punch a hole through the fabric of time and space itself. This causes him to transfer out of this dimensional realm and into a higher one that’s been described as a “highway” through history. By focusing on a single point, Barry can reemerge into normal space at another time and place altogether, effectively granting him the ability to travel anywhere in time and space.

Mucking about with time is, of course, massively dangerous and carries a tremendous risk. Not only does traveling through and altering history carry the potential for devastating unforeseeable side effects but crossing into that realm potentially carries the risk of getting “lost” and unable to return.

On the more mundane side of things, Barry is highly intelligent and has a sharp and analytical mind. He learns and retains information rapidly and can scan a scene and construct an entire chain of events by observing evidence left behind, a skill that serves greatly in his career as a forensic examiner. Adding to that is a decent skill in chemistry and computer science. In addition, Barry is well-read and at least familiar with concepts in multiple fields of science

Reincarnation Information

Age: 23
Species: Human
Appearance: Unchanged from Canon

Starting Location: New Los Angeles

History: Jason East was born and raised in Los Angeles before the invasion and lived a somewhat more peaceful life. He didn’t witness the murder of his mother at the hands of a man in a yellow suit during a lightning storm, and his father never wrongfully went to prison for her murder. The trade off was that he never even met the man.

Jason grew up in a poor area of the city, raised by a single mother who struggled to make ends meet and provide for her child. Although he did well in school and his immense intellect was readily apparent fairly early on his future prospects didn’t look so good which led to him becoming disillusioned rather quickly and falling in with the wrong crowds in middle and high school.

His mother did her best but their relationship became more strained as Jason became more and more frustrated with a world that he didn’t seem to belong to and he sank further into a life of crime, running with gangs and criminals though he never quite crossed the line to actually hurting people, but theft and vandalism? Those were well on the list.

Things came to a head shortly after high school when a random breaking and entering ended with an elderly woman being injured thanks to him. While the rest of the gang ran for it, Jason stayed behind, phoning for an ambulance… which arrived with the police and promptly arrested the boy. Sadly, Jason found himself in front of a judge who’d made a career out of being tough on crime and while his actions earned him some leniency, his refusal to name who else had been involved reduced that considerably and Jason ended up facing two years behind bars. His mother met him on the way out, where he heard the last thing he would from her.

She told him she was disappointed.

Words that stuck with him during his time behind bars. While incarcerated, Jason became determined to stop traveling down that path and took advantage of education and work programs offered him, continuing his education a little and earning him parole after less than two years. With a fresh start ahead of him, Jason was a free man again.

The day the invasion hit.

L.A. was devastated almost immediately but even as chaos and death erupted around him, Jason’s only thought was to dive into it and find his mother, get her to safety. With the roads packed and vehicles stalled and unmoving he did the only thing he could: he ran. He ran as fast and as hard as he ever had, as much as he could.

He was too slow.

His home was gone, reduced to a smoldering hole in the ground and he was forced to join countless others in hiding, waiting out the immense battle and then… it was over. The world didn’t end, humanity had survived and... weeks later, he discovered his mother had too. Terribly injured but in an unresponsive coma. She lived but he couldn’t talk to her, couldn’t hear her voice anymore. The doctors told him that it was impossible to predict what could happen. Either she’d wake up one day… or she wouldn’t.

Since then, he’s taken on whatever work he can around the New Los Angeles area both legitimate and… less legitimate, all for the hope of getting his mom the best care that he possibly could. It seemed this was simply the way his life was going to go. … At least until one day, a quick sprint for a bus turned into an impossibly long run that carried him all the way out of town in seconds. His first Echo had hit, bestowing the physics-shattering power of superspeed upon him.

… If only it hadn’t come almost two years too late.

Personality:
Jason East differs from Barry Allen in a couple of areas.

For one, Jason never grew up with a mission the way that Barry Allen did. As such, he lacks much of the drive that his preincarnation had and is a little more aimless in his ambition and goals. He’s much more adrift than his previous self was, interested more in living in the moment than pursuing something in the future.

Second, he doesn’t have nearly the regard for authority that Barry did. Barry Allen was the sort of person who did his own thing but he still had respect for the law, enough to join the police force. Jason… does not, preferring to think and act according to his own moral values, even when they go against conventional law and order.

That all having been said, he does still have Barry’s heart and his sense of justice. Not to mention his impulsive and stubborn nature. Jason might not be above the law or even against it… but he’d never do so in a way that would hurt others, or put them at risk. Like his old self, he’ll never turn his back on an injustice or in somebody in need of help and will not hesitate to step in and correct what he feels needs correcting.

Starting Echoes:
Ability Tier 2: The connection to the Speed Force, unlocking his powers albeit not a full understanding of them. Like in canon, his full strength will unfold as he tests his limits and learns more of what he’s truly capable of.

Item Tier 1: His suit.

Memory Tier 1: The memory of chasing a man in a yellow version of his suit. He has no idea of the man’s identity but he does remember Barry’s determination to catch him.

Memory Tier 1: Witness the murder of Bette Souci at the hands of General Eiling and carrying her body out over the water to detonate harmlessly away from the city.

Goals for RtE: For the most part, I’d love to see Jason grow into the hero that Barry was and become something of a legend and protector of New L.A.. I’d also really love to get the chance to do a plot involving his ability to travel through time.
